The practical difference

White noise contains equal power per unit of frequency. To many listeners it sounds bright or hiss-like because it contains substantial high-frequency energy. Pink noise reduces power as frequency increases, producing a softer and more balanced texture. Brown noise reduces high-frequency power more steeply and sounds deeper, closer to a low rumble.

These names describe signal characteristics, not guaranteed effects on a person. A small laptop speaker may reproduce brown noise poorly, while bright headphones may make white noise tiring. The irregular sounds in the room also matter. The most useful colour is the one that makes distracting variation less noticeable at a low, comfortable volume.

Why steady sound can feel less distracting

Start with the speaker or headphone level low. Listen to each colour for the same short interval rather than raising volume to make the difference more impressive. If one texture sits behind the task without attracting attention, use that option. If all three are distracting, silence or a different environment is the better tool.

Take regular breaks from headphones. Stop if you notice discomfort, ringing, fatigue, or reduced awareness. Do not use background noise to mask alarms, traffic, machinery, coworkers, children, or any sound you need for safety. The purpose is a gentler work environment, not maximum isolation.

No colour has to become an identity

People sometimes describe themselves as a brown-noise person or insist that one colour is the correct choice for a particular brain. That language is stronger than the evidence. Preferences can change with speakers, rooms, fatigue, and task type. A neutral generator should make comparison easy without turning a temporary preference into a health claim.
